On the 20th of May, 1498, the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama dropped anchor off a headland the locals called Kappad — 16 kilometres north of Calicut, on the Malabar Coast. He had sailed for eleven months from Lisbon. His was the first European fleet to reach India by sea. The world that followed was never quite the same.
The Zamorin's court received the fleet. Spices — black pepper, cardamom, ginger — began to move in the opposite direction. Within a generation, Calicut had become the greatest trading port in the Indian Ocean world, and this beach was its front door. A stone still stands on the shore to mark the landing.
Today, Kappad Beach is unhurried in the way that Kozhikode's more popular shores are not. Fishing boats in the mornings. Quiet afternoons. The same north-Kerala light that fell on da Gama's sails falls now on the infinity pool, on the terrace where guests take the evening cocktail, and on the sea from every room.
The Vasco Da Gama Beach Resort & Spa stands at the edge of all of this — 47 rooms facing the sea, a full-service ayurvedic spa, and a kitchen that does what the Malabar coast has always done best: make the freshest fish in India taste like the first meal you have ever eaten.
